BORDEAUX FUTURES

What are Bordeaux Futures?

  • VINTAGES Bordeaux Futures program is a great way to buy top-quality Bordeaux wines before they are released in the retail market. There is such worldwide demand for key wines from Bordeaux that producers sell a portion of their wine as Futures, that is 12 to 18 months before bottling, while the wines are still ageing in barrel.

Bordeaux Futures offer significant savings. Most of the wines are later retailed at substantially higher prices. Futures offerings include everything from up-and-coming chateaux to illustrious producers such as Latour, Margaux, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, and Ausone.

Many of these wines are produced in very small quantities and are often only available as Futures. Given the growing demand for top-quality Bordeaux wines, especially in Eastern Europe, South Asia and East Asia, buying Futures is the best way to secure these wines.

VINTAGES offers a huge selection of Futures at prices that will fit the budget of anyone from new fine wine buyers to long-time collectors.

  • Unlike most US retailers who require full payment, VINTAGES requires only 50% deposit of the total value of your order. When the wines arrive approximately two years later and are ready to deliver to your choice of LCBO store, the balance is due.

What is the difference between the numerical system used in the General Purchase part of the LCBO store and VINTAGES scale for perceived dryness/sweetness?

PERCEIVED SUGAR CONTENT

VINTAGES uses a perceived sweetness rating system based tasting evaluation. The VINTAGES buyers take into account factors such as ripeness, acidity levels, tannin as well as sweetness when assessing vintages products. A wine with a relatively high amount sugar may be rated Medium (M) or even Medium Dry (MD) if there is a heightened amount of acidity. Similarly, a red wine made from very ripe fruit and with relatively low amount of sugar may be rated Dry (D) instead of Extra Dry (XD) due to the ripeness of the fruit, low acidity and tannin.

VINTAGES scale of perceived dryness/sweetness is:

(XD) Extra Dry
(D)
Dry
(MD)
Medium Dry
(M) Medium
(MS) Medium Sweet
(S) Sweet

In contrast, wines sold in the General Purchase part of the LCBO store use the numerical system which is based on the actual amount of sugar in the wine. A wine containing between 0 to 0.49 grams of residual sugar per 100 ml is coded 0. A wine with between 0.50 to 1.49 grams of residual sugar is coded 1, between 1.50 to 2.49 grams is coded 2, and so forth.
