CHÂTEAU CERTAN DE MAY  2004
Pomerol

  672147    (XD)            750 mL    $84

TASTING NOTE: Tannic, rough-hewn, and backward, but also dense and promising, this dark plum/purple-tinged 2004 offers notes of forest floor, roasted herbs, asphalt, sweet black cherries, and minerals. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium-bodied, tannic, muscular Pomerol that requires 3-4 years of bottle age. It should drink well for 15+ years. Score - 89. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

TASTING NOTE: A tiny production of only 343 cases (as opposed to 600+) were produced from this 7.5-acre vineyard located in the heart of Pomerol's famed plateau. The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 La Fleur de Gay offers raspberry, blueberry, floral, graphite, and toasty oak characteristics, medium to full body, beautiful richness and purity, and a nicely layered texture. With low acidity, outstanding concentration, and a long finish, this beauty should age effortlessly for 12-15 years. Score - 91. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

CHÂTEAU LE BON PASTEUR  2004
Pomerol

  671446    (XD)            750 mL    $85

TASTING NOTE: As always, Lynch-Bages comes in with an impressive performance. It is rich, dense and ripe with black fruit flavors. The texture is solid, the intense fruits complemented by ripe tannins. And, to finish, there is the freshness of currant fruit acidity. A really fine wine. An Editors' Choice. Score - 94. (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, June 1, 2007)

CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ  2004
St-Julien, 2e Cru

  670117    (XD)            750 mL    $95

TASTING NOTE: Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades. Score - 93. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

CHÂTEAU MAGDELAINE  2004

St-Émilion Ier Grand Cru Classé

  671560    (XD)            750 mL    $209

TASTING NOTE: A brilliant effort from proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse, Pavie's 2004 (7,050 cases) exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color, a surprisingly soft, forward style for this hallowed terroir, full-bodied, and concentrated creme de cassis flavors intermixed with cherries, truffles, and subtle smoky wood notes. Beautifully-textured as well as expansive, this may be the most developed and forward Pavie made by Perse since his acquisition of the property in 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025+. Score - 95. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

  664300    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: A sensational effort and one of the stars of the vintage, Smith-Haut-Lafitte's 2004 possesses an inky/blue/purple-tinged color as well as a sumptuous nose of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, blueberries, and blackberries. Surprisingly full-bodied for the vintage with stunning concentration, purity, and overall harmony, this is another brilliant wine from the proprietors, the Cathiards, who have done such a spectacular job at this estate since the early 1990s. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022. Score - 93. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

CLOS L'EGLISE  2004
Pomerol

  63073    (D)            750 mL    $179

TASTING NOTE: Made in a very forward style, the 2004 Clos l'Eglise offers sweet mocha-infused black raspberry and chocolate cherry-like fruit in its intense aromatics. In the mouth, it is pure silk, medium-bodied, and beautifully concentrated with no hard edges. Filled with sensual fruit, glycerin, and body, this is a delicious, food and consumer-friendly, complex Pomerol that should drink beautifully for 12-14 years. Score - 91. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

COS D'ESTOURNEL  2004
St-Estèphe, 2e Cru

  670968    (XD)            750 mL    $145

TASTING NOTE: A beautiful example of the vintage, proprietor Michel Reybier and his top-notch winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length, it should be at its finest between 2009 and 2020+. Score - 92. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

GÉRARD DEPARDIEU CONFIANCE  2004
Ier Côtes de Blaye

  61762    (XD)            750 mL    $59

"Bordeaux's Bernard Magrez made his fortune as a négociant ... Over the years, he also acquired many estates, and in 2005 he sold his négociant firm to concentrate on winemaking. Magrez now owns 10 Bordeaux properties and contracts for special cuvées at 10 more in Bordeaux and 5 in Languedoc-Roussillon ... Wherever he goes, Magrez sets the highest standards." (Robert Parker Jr., Business Week, May 14, 2007) This wine is from the impressive Magrez portfolio and, yes, it is produced in partnership with the famous French actor.

TASTING NOTE: This elegant 500-case blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Malbec exhibits gorgeous aromatics of sweet berries intermixed with smoke, flowers, and forest floor. An attractive, medium-bodied effort with tremendous richness, texture, and concentration, it should be consumed during its first 7-8 years of life. Score - (89-91). (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2006)

Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by fleshy notes of black currants, cherries, smoke, earth, and spring flowers. Lovely, ripe, and opulent, it is best consumed during its first 10-15 years of life. Score - 89. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

Pomerol, 2nd Wine of Château Lafleur

  672113    (XD)            750 mL    $95

Score - 89-91. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, June 30, 2005)

CHÂTEAU L'ENCLOS  2003
Pomerol

  71993    (XD)            750 mL    $45

TASTING NOTE: This family winery is one of the appellation's sure values. The vineyard is planted on a mixture of stony, sandy and clay soil and is located in the Moulinet area between the roads to Lyon and Paris. The wine displays a bright deep ruby colour. Its expressive bouquet offers a mixture of crushed red berries, vanilla toasted wood and light tobacco. Powerful on the palate, it's supple and fruity. Well balanced and supported by soft and fine tannins. Already very attractive, this wine will be at its best in two years. Score - (out of 3). Guide Hachette, 2007)

CLOS L'EGLISE  2003
Pomerol

  63123    (D)            750 mL    $165

TASTING NOTE: Lots of violet and floral character with plum and berry. Full, round and juicy, with plummy vanilla and chocolate character. Yummy wine. Best after 2008. Score - 93. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2006)

CHÂTEAU CLOS DE SARPE  2001
St-Émilion Grand Cru

  579599    (XD)            750 mL    $179

TASTING NOTE: This may be the biggest, richest, most intensely concentrated wine of the vintage in St-Emilion (much like it was in 2000). Sadly, there are only 900 cases of this unfined/unfiltered 85% Merlot / 15% Cabernet Sauvignon blend (made from yields of 23 hectoliters per hectare), most of which comes from 60-80-year old vines. Made in a huge, nectar of the vine-like style, it is incredibly pure and rich, but is very uncompromising. It appears to be a modern day version of a wine made in the 1800s. Enormously concentrated, massive on the palate, with excruciatingly high levels of tannin, but also high levels of extract, it is meant for patient connoisseurs. It will have a fascinating evolution, lasting 30-40 years, but being conservative, I will just say drink it between 2010-2025. In all respects, this admirable effort is a throwback to days long gone. Score - 95. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2004)

CHÂTEAU DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU  2001
St-Julien, 2e Cru

  732230    (XD)            750 mL    $159

TASTING NOTE: Loads of crushed berries on the nose, with hints of flowers and minerals. Very aromatic. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, cappuccino and berry aftertaste. Really refined. Best after 2009. Score - 92. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2004)

CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE-LAS CASES  2001
St-Julien, 2e Cru

  603902    (XD)            750 mL    $259

TASTING NOTE: This is very floral and perfumed with lots of violets, roses and berries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a racy finish. Superfresh and long. Focused and clean. Best after 2010. Score - 94. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2004)

CHÂTEAU MONBOUSQUET  2001
St-Émilion Grand Cru

  71977    (XD)            750 mL    $139

TASTING NOTE: The home estate of Chantal and Gerard Perse, the 2001 Monbousquet (a 7,500-case blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon bottled unfined and unfiltered) is a big, flamboyant, sexy offering with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of licorice, dried herbs, smoke, black currants, and blackberries. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, opulent, and forward, this is a juicy, succulent, seductive claret to drink over the next 10-12 years. Score - 91. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2004)

CHÂTEAU DU TERTRE  2000
Margaux, 5e Cru

  72157    (XD)            750 mL    $109

TASTING NOTE: A dense purple color is followed by layers of concentrated blackberry fruit intertwined with damp earth, mushroom, and sweet, toasty barrique smells. With ripe tannin, medium to full body, a layered texture, and a concentrated, impressively endowed finish, this is the finest Du Tertre since their 1979. This is a property on the move ... up! Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018. Score - 91. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 2003)

CHÂTEAU FERRIÈRE  2000
Margaux, 3e Cru

  72330    (XD)            750 mL    $129

TASTING NOTE: This shows lots of coffee, tobacco, currants and berry character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium, silky finish. One of the great success stories in the Medoc of recent. And going strong as ever. Best after 2008. Score - 93. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2003)

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BAGES LIBÉRAL  2000
Pauillac, 5e Cru

  72165    (XD)            750 mL    $115

TASTING NOTE: Lots of currant and berry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with compacted fruit and a silky tannin structure. Best of Haut-Bages-Libéral ever. Best after 2009. Score - 92. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2003)

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BERGEY  1999
Pessac-Léognan

  62810    (XD)            750 mL    $65

TASTING NOTE: The 1999 Haut Bergey is a classic Graves. It is extraordinarily complex aromatically, light on its feet in the mouth as well as a model of elegance and symmetry. The color is dark ruby, and the splendid nose reveals notes of cigar tobacco intermixed with plum, cherry, and currant fruit, grilled herbs, and roasted nuts. It is medium-bodied, with sweet fruit on the attack, and an expansive Burgundian-like finish with light tannin and enough acidity to provide grip, freshness, and delineation. This terrific effort needs to be consumed during its first 7-12 years of life. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 2002)

CHÂTEAU LAGRANGE  1999
St-Julien, 3e Cru

  72090    (XD)            750 mL    $84

TASTING NOTE: Good bright medium ruby. Full-blown, expressive nose combines spiced black plum and strong torrefaction notes of smoke, coffee and mocha. Offers lovely freshness in the mouth, with flavors of dark berries and flowers enlivened by juicy acidity. Easy to drink now owing to its fine tannins, but this attractive midweight should offer another eight to ten years of pleasure. Score - 89. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2004)

CHÂTEAU MONTROSE  1999
St-Estèphe, 2e Cru

  72082    (XD)            750 mL    $119

TASTING NOTE: The black/purple-colored 1999 Montrose offers up notes of pure black fruits intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. It is extremely concentrated, surprisingly powerful and dense, with moderate tannin. Its size, strength, and medium to full-bodied personality are atypical for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 2002)

CHÂTEAU GRUAUD LAROSE  1998
St-Julien, 2e Cru

  72074    (XD)            750 mL    $115

TASTING NOTE: Perfumed sweet fruit nose with berry, liquorice and spice. Very young, very wonderful and great depth. Lovely long and complex. Fantastic. Score - (out of 5). www.decanter.com, 2001)

CHÂTEAU MONTROSE  1998
St-Estèphe, 2e Cru

  72066    (XD)            750 mL    $115

TASTING NOTE: A classic effort, the 1998 Montrose exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a sweet nose of jammy cassis, licorice, earth, and smoke. It is a powerful and full-bodied wine with well-integrated tannin. Given Montrose's tendency to shut down, it is performing better out of bottle than I expected. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 2001)

CHÂTEAU LAFON-ROCHET  1996
St-Estèphe, 4e Cru

  17855    (XD)            750 mL    $109

TASTING NOTE: One of the sleepers of the 1996 vintage, Lafon-Rochet has turned out an atypically powerful, rich, and concentrated wine bursting with black currant fruit. The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. This wine remains one of the finest values from the luxury-priced 1996 vintage, and is well-worth purchasing by readers who are willing to invest 5-6 years of patience; it should keep for two decades. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 1999)

Y DE CHÂTEAU D'YQUEM  2005
Bordeaux

  74146    (D)            750 mL    $375

'Y' is Château d'Yquem's rarely produced dry white wine.

TASTING NOTE: Has lovely vanilla and tropical fruit character. Full, rich and long, yet elegant and racy, with dried pineapple and white peach. Gorgeous. This is two-thirds Sauvignon and one-third Semillon. Score - 92-94. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Web Only, 2007)

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BERGEY BLANC  2004
Pessac-Léognan

  62794    (XD)            750 mL    $53

Neal Martin's Wine Journal is a relatively recent addition to Robert Parker's website.

TASTING NOTE: A lovely grassy nose with great definition and vitality. The palate has well-integrated oak with fresh apple and lime. Rounded with a crisp finish. Very fine, one of my favourite white Pessac wines. Score - (90-92). (Neal Martin, Wine Journal, www.erobertparker.com, April 2005)

TASTING NOTE: Aromas of honey, pineapple, cream and piecrust follow through to a full body, with lots of caramel and tropical fruit character. Long and layered. Rich and delicious. Drink now. Score - 92. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Web Only, 2008)

CHÂTEAU D'YQUEM  2004
Sauternes, Ier Cru Supérieur

  670059    (S)            375 mL    $195

TASTING NOTE: Wonderful aromas of pineapple, apple and lemon, with loads of botrytis. Full-bodied, but very refined, superfresh and racy. Goes on and on. Fabulous. Incredible purity and brightness. Like a perfectly cut diamond. Pierre Lurton, the manager of Yquem as well as Cheval-Blanc, really wanted to mark his arrival at the legendary estate, so he went to draconian lengths to deliver something superb in 2004. Score - 95-100. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, June 30, 2005)

This wine was ranked #14 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2006.

TASTING NOTE: This is very sweet and rich on the nose, with toffee, honey and spices. Full-bodied, with thick honey, spice, dried apricot and syrup flavors. Lasts for minutes on the palate. Big botrytis bomb. Love it. Best after 2010. Score - 95. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2006)

CHÂTEAU RAYMOND-LAFON  2003

Robert Parker awarded this wine a score of 92 but provided no tasting note. (www.erobertparker.com, April 2006).

TASTING NOTE: Tasted twice - last time in April 2006. Every time I taste this wine, it gains more and more nuances. Light golden, extremely intense tropical fruit aromas, botrytis was simply fantastic with incredible depth and intensity. It was extremely sophisticated and refined on the palate with gobs of nuances and 2 minute aftertaste. 99.9% of entire harvest became Grand Vin. Wow - this one is close to [being] a legend!!! (www.greatbordeauxwines.com, 2008)

CHÂTEAU D'YQUEM  1999

Robert Parker Jr. awarded this wine a score of 92 but provided no tasting note. (www.erobertparker.com, April 2005)

TASTING NOTE: And finally a particularly forward vintage of this superlative wine which showed all the richness and concentration that Yquem can muster even if not much nerve or tension. It stood up beautifully to the Roquefort served with it, cleverly and successfully sandwiched in sweet apple slices. Drink 2006-2035. Score - 17.5 (out of 20). (Jancis Robinson M.W., www.jancisrobinson.com, Dec. 3, 2007)

CHÂTEAU D'YQUEM  1998
Sauternes, Ier Cru Supérieur

  686519    (S)            375 mL    $209

TASTING NOTE: Pale gold. Knockout aromas of creme brulee, coconut, vanilla bean, honey and orange peel. Lush and seductively silky in the mouth; its creamy, seamless texture makes it seem deceptively accessible today but sound acid structure should keep it going for 20 years or more. Not hugely sweet or tropical but very complex and fine. Firm, hazelnutty finish offers great length, if not quite the grip of the '89. Score - 95. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2000)

CHÂTEAU RIEUSSEC  1996
Sauternes, Ier Cru

  72173    (S)            750 mL    $109

TASTING NOTE: This wine offers an orange, caramel, and honeyed nose with intriguing quince/kumquat fruit flavors, a complex personality, and a low level of glycerin in the mouth. This medium to full-bodied, long wine will be at its peak between 2000-2020. Score - 89. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 1999)

DOMAINE DES LAMBRAYS CLOS DES LAMBRAYS  2005
Grand Cru

  588566    (XD)            750 mL    $195

Two of Morey St. Denis' four Grand Crus are monopoles (i.e., a vineyard wholly owned by a single proprietor), which is a rarity in Burgundy, and both are in this Classics Collection. This Clos de Lambray and Mommesin's Clos de Tart (683649) are regarded as jewels in the crown of their respective owners.

TASTING NOTE: Medium red. Riper, darker nose features blueberry, spices and a sexy earthy perfume. Supple and juicy, with excellent spicy lift to the blackberry, blueberry, game and mineral flavors. Sweeter and denser than the village example but more noteworthy for its insinuating soil tones than for sheer size-or is this simply in a shell today? The long, resounding, dry finish features very fine-grained tannins and lovely lift. This, too, seems to be shutting down in the bottle. But it should be long-lived. Score - 93(+?). (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, March/April 2008)

ARMAND ROUSSEAU CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE  2005
Grand Cru

  708271    (XD)            750 mL    $235

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze offers alluring aromas of licorice, mint, vanilla, plum paste, cherry preserves and rose petals, and seduces the palate with silky, incredibly refined texture and several octaves of fruit, herbal, floral and mineral notes, leading to a reverberative finish in which fruit pit and stony, chalky elements lend a sense of dark, weighty authority and an umami-like, meaty savor promotes uncontrollable salivation. No layering or mixing of metaphors can hope to do justice to the layering and concatenation of flavors on display. Score - (96-98). (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, April 2007)

ARMAND ROUSSEAU CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN  2005
Grand Cru

  675710    (XD)            750 mL    $125

TASTING NOTE: This too is quite ripe though by no means surmature, offering a mix of black cherry and blue berry accompanied by ample earth and game hints that continue onto the rich, sweet, textured and fleshy flavors that are generous but not soft on the opulent and deep finish. Like the Gevrey, this is more expressive and accessible than usual at this stage though there is an underlying tannic spine that will enable to improve for up to a decade.
Score - 89-92. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Jan. 2007)

ARMAND ROUSSEAU CLOS DE LA ROCHE  2005
Grand Cru

  675702    (XD)            750 mL    $135

TASTING NOTE: Rousseau's 2005 Clos de la Roche offers a nose of ripe cherries, cedar and brown spices, a rich and expansive palate, and a sweet, pure, juicy finish of cherry, boysenberry, toasty, crusty pastry, hints of caramel, a whiff of wood smoke and a lick of salt. For purity of fruit and intensity allied to formidable extract and superb, lattice-like structure, it's hard to beat this wine as a candidate for at least a couple of decades in the cellar, one to check up on in eight or ten years. Score - (92-94). (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, April 2007)

ARMAND ROUSSEAU GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN CLOS ST. JACQUES  2005
Ier Cru

  675686    (XD)            750 mL    $189

TASTING NOTE: With the 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques (which by its position in tastings here the Rousseaus conspicuously rate as grand cru) we arrive at the first wine that is matured in new wood. Pure, sweet, fresh black cherry fruit, marrowy and enveloping carnal richness, mysteriously enticing florality, low-toned, chalky minerality and accents of black tea and star anise are featured in this remarkably seamless wine. Meat, minerals and mystery dominate a finish that is profoundly layered yet preserves sheer palate-cleansing refreshment and positively vibrates with vividly fresh fruit intensity ... Score - (94-96). (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, April 2007)

DOMAINE ALAIN JEANNIARD MOREY-ST-DENIS VIEILLES VIGNES  2005

  62885    (D)            750 mL    $50

Alain Jeanniard assumed the reins of his family's domaine in 2000. With fruit sourced from 80-year-old vines, only five half-barrels of this wine were made. From its garnet-hued mantle and openly fragrant nose (reminiscent of crushed red fruits) to its well-structured palate and silky tannins, this lovely wine will charm any Burgundy enthusiast, especially those hunting for superb value.

DOMAINE LAMBRAYS MOREY ST. DENIS LES LOUPS  2005
Ier Cru

  596916    (XD)            750 mL    $115

TASTING NOTE: Here there is more aromatic elegance as well as depth with a broader spectrum of fruit aromas nuanced by spice and mineral hints that continue onto the rich, vibrant and intense medium full flavors underpinned by suave tannins and a detailed and wonderfully pure finish. Recommended. Drink: 2013+. Score - 91. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Jan. 1, 2008)

DOMAINE MOMMESSIN CLOS DE TART  2004
Grand Cru

  683649    (XD)            750 mL    $245

Two of Morey St. Denis' four Grand Crus are monopoles (i.e., a vineyard wholly owned by a single proprietor), which is a rarity in Burgundy, and both are in this Classics Collection. This Clos de Tart and Domaine Lambrays' Clos de Lambray (588566) are regarded as jewels in the crown of their respective owners.

TASTING NOTE: A discreetly oaky overlay frames ripe spicy blackberry, dark cherry and a hint of forest floor aromas that lead to rich, full, sweet, thick and powerful flavors that culminate in a linear and penetrating finish. This is a relatively big and concentrated effort that offers a really attractive sense of underlying tension and energy. Score - 91. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Jan. 1, 2007)

JOSEPH DROUHIN CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN  2000
Grand Cru

  957043    (XD)            750 mL    $109

Joseph Drouhin's winemaking technique remains strictly traditional. The grapes are hand-picked, and no fertilizers or weed-killers are used. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats, after which the wine ages 18 months in oak barrels. This is a silky and harmonious effort, with tart cherry dominating the nose, tempered by hints of earth and woody oak at the edges. Silky smooth and balanced by racy acidity, it offers flavours of dried cherry and sweet spices that linger on the long, long finish.

DOMAINE ANTONIN GUYON VOLNAY CLOS DES CHÊNES  2005
Ier Cru

  73650    (D)            750 mL    $67

TASTING NOTE: An absolutely gorgeous nose blends red, black and blue berry fruit aromas plus notes of violets, earth and hints of spice and smoke that complement perfectly the rich, full and admirably powerful big-boned flavors supported by dense but fine tannins and outstanding length. This is a classic Clos des Chênes, which means that it's a powerful wine by the usual standards of Volnay and built to age for the better part of a decade. Score - 90-92. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 2007)

CHATEAU DE LA MALTROYE CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET CLOS SAINT-JEAN  2005
Ier Cru

  63594    (XD)            750 mL    $54

TASTING NOTE: This is definitely more elegant with airy and pure red pinot aromas nuanced by hints of minerality, earth and a touch of smoke that complements the ripe, concentrated and firm but not hard flavors that deliver excellent length and punch. This is a refined Chassagne. Drink 2011+. Score - 89-91. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 2007)

DOMAINE ANTONIN GUYON CORTON-BRESSANDES  2005
Grand Cru

  73668    (D)            750 mL    $89

TASTING NOTE: As it should be, this is finer, more elegant and more sophisticated though interestingly there is a touch of menthol here too on the otherwise pure red and black pinot fruit nose that introduces finely detailed and intensely mineral flavors that possess driving power on the superbly long finish. This is a near perfect alliance of power and refinement and certainly as Corton goes, this is an elegant example. Score - 91-94. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 2007)

JOSEPH DROUHIN CLOS DES MOUCHES  2005
Ier Cru

  507939    (XD)            750 mL    $99

TASTING NOTE: Representing huge domaine holdings and in effect the Drouhin flag ship, their 2005 Beaune Clos des Mouches displays aromas of roasted meat, wood smoke, black truffles, plum and black raspberry. Persistently meaty in the mouth, with plum pit and wet stone adjuncts, this is archetypal 2005: richly ripe yet with an invigorating tart fresh edge and quite dark, even somber in flavor shadings. The long savory finish, while pouring out a generous helping of top quality fruit and meat juices, also offers a veritable catalog of mineral nuances ... if only one had names for them all. This should be terrific in 5-7 years. Score - 92. (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

JOSEPH DROUHIN CLOS DES MOUCHES  2003
Ier Cru

  950386    (XD)            750 mL    $95

TASTING NOTE: Plums and black cherries can be found in the aromatic profile of the 2003 Beaune Clos des Mouches (red). Revealing impressive amplitude, a silky, expansive nature, this medium-bodied effort is lush, deep, and dense. Bottled unfined, it displays spiced dark cherry and blackberry flavors as well as a structured backbone. Incidentally, while I long thought that Drouhin's famous Clos des Mouches was produced entirely from estate vineyards, I learned that it is in fact a blend that includes purchased wine. Drink it between 2006 and 2012. Score - 89. (Pierre Rovani, www.erobertparker.com, April 2005)

DOMAINE GUY ROULOT MEURSAULT LES MEIX CHAVAUX  2005

  52928    (XD)            750 mL    $85

TASTING NOTE: Reticent aromas of crushed stone and menthol. Tactile and perfumed in the mouth; a step up in concentration and grip from the Vireuils. Flavors of lime skin and hazelnut are nicely lifted by a floral element. Plenty of texture and sweetness here. Finishes with lovely persistence. Roulot prefers the 2004 vintage to 2005, but not for this wine, as the normally high acidity here favored the '05. Score - 91. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2007)

DOMAINE THIERRY ET PASCALE MATROT MEURSAULT-CHARMES  2005
Ier Cru

  748939    (XD)            750 mL    $95

TASTING NOTE: Notes of orange blossom, lemon rind and spice hints can be found on the expressive and relatively high-toned nose that merges into exceptionally tight and backward flavors that possess ample dry extract that confers an almost chewy texture on the strict finish. While this is quite linear today, the underlying material is such that it will probably turn the palate impression to one of opulence and generosity with age. Outstanding! Drink: 2010+. Score - 91. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, July 1, 2007)

JOSEPH DROUHIN CLOS DES MOUCHES  2005
Ier Cru

  958769    (XD)            750 mL    $109

TASTING NOTE: Bright and fruity, featuring spring blossom, citrus and apricot notes matched to a fleshy texture. Beautifully balanced and very appealing now, but should also age well. Best from 2008 through 2015. Score - 91. (Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com, July 31, 2007)

JOSEPH DROUHIN MEURSAULT-PERRIÈRES  2005
Ier Cru

  932087    (XD)            750 mL    $95

TASTING NOTE: Very ripe aromas of nectarine, peach pit and hazelnut. Rich and very ripe but backward, with dense, smooth flavors of peach, minerals and powdered stone. The impression of full ripeness continues on the very long, almost pineappley finish. The highest in alcohol of these 2005s along with the Montrachet, at 14.2%. Score - 92. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2007)

JOSEPH DROUHIN PULIGNY-MONTRACHET FOLATIÈRES  2005
Ier Cru

  959254    (XD)            750 mL    $89

TASTING NOTE: This has a firm spine of acidity, but also good richness, providing a backdrop for the lemon, hazelnut and vanilla flavors to stretch out across the palate. There's nice harmony, followed by a long aftertaste of toast and spice. Best from 2008 through 2018.
Score - 92. (Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com, Sept. 30, 2007)

PIERRE-YVES COLIN-MOREY MEURSAULT LES CHARMES  2005
Ier Cru

  53066    (XD)            750 mL    $129

Influential wine critic Jancis Robinson MW did a two-part series earlier this year on Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, describing this tiny négociant as "a new white wine producer who has impressed me a great deal" and as a "remarkable producer [who] is not particularly well known in France but his dense, pure whites are rapidly forging a reputation in both the UK and US". (www.jancisrobinson.com, March 1/3, 2008) At press time there were no reviews available, but it's worth noting that The Wine Advocate has also been duly impressed as it has consistently awarded previous vintages of this wine scores in the 90s. This rich, satin-textured Meursault exhibits aromas and flavours of pears and minerals as well as intriguing mint notes. Like Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey's other wines, this wine is produced in extremely limited numbers. If you can get your hands on one then enjoy it over the next 8 years.

PIERRE-YVES COLIN-MOREY PULIGNY-MONTRACHET LES REFERTS  2005
Ier Cru

  53058    (XD)            750 mL    $129

Not reviewed at press time, this single-vineyard Puligny-Montrachet is from the spectacular 2005 vintage, considered one of the finest in many years for Burgundy. Other 2005 wines from this producer, including other single-vineyard Pulignys, received scores of 90 and above from Wine Spectator. Expect similar excellence.

JOSEPH DROUHIN CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET MARQUIS DE LAGUICHE  2004

  959007    (XD)            750 mL    $86

TASTING NOTE: As it always is, this is bigger and richer with an expressive and very ripe nose of orchard fruit that leans toward the exotic that is followed by impressively dense and sappy full-bodied flavors that coat the mouth and culminate in a powerful finish. Like the Chassagne villages, this is a serious wine but it's not one that I would age for very long as it risks becoming unduly heavy with time. Drink: 2009+. Score - 89. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, July 2007)

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE CHABLIS BOUGROS  2006
Grand Cru

  941229    (XD)            750 mL    $66

TASTING NOTE: Pale, green-tinged color. Highly aromatic nose offers lime, menthol and powdered stone, plus a touch of gingery spice. Rich, fat and suave, with lovely ripe acidity framing the sweet peach flavor. Doesn't have the cut of a more classic year but this is nonetheless in a fairly delicate style. William Fevre owns half the surface of this grand cru (6 of 12 hectares), and winemaker Seguier notes that this wine has been stronger in recent years owing to earlier picking. Score - 90-92. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2007)

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE CHABLIS BOUGROS CÔTE BOUGUEROTS  2006
Grand Cru

  51821    (XD)            750 mL    $77

TASTING NOTE: Pale, green-tinged color. Highly nuanced, brisk aromas of powdered stone, lime blossom, grapefruit and quinine. Silky on entry, then suave and vibrant in the middle, with a strong minerally, chalky character, lovely subtle sweetness and an uncommonly fine-grained texture. Finishes with superb rising length and palate-saturating crushed stone. No clay here, just pure Kimmeridgian limestone on an extremely steep south-facing slope. Score - 92-95. DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE CHABLIS LES CLOS  2006
Grand Cru

  641381    (XD)            750 mL    $86

TASTING NOTE: Pale color. Musky, minerally aromas of lemon, mint, raw pineapple and quinine; very backward and very Chablis. Silky on entry, then dense in the middle, with terrific thrust and depth to its very dry but ripe flavors of citrus peel, minerals and spices. Wonderfully concentrated, solid, powerfully structured grand cru with outstanding minerally persistence. Potentially the best vintage yet for this bottling and one of the early highlights of the vintage. Score - 94-97. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2007)

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE CHABLIS LES PREUSES  2006
Grand Cru

  74773    (XD)            750 mL    $77

TASTING NOTE: A touch of wood spice with subtle anise, clove and saline notes add nuance to the pretty and elegant mix of white and yellow fruit aromas that introduce round and generous flavors that offer up real volume and mid-palate density, all wrapped around a firm acid spine on the refined, pure and explosive finish. This is positively stunning, certainly in an absolute sense but particularly so in the context of the vintage. One to look for. Score - 92-95. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Oct. 1, 2007)

DOMAINE COURBIS LE SABAROTTE CORNAS  2005

  944520    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: The safest bet is the 2005 Cornas La Sabarotte. Its dense purple color is accompanied by notes of gamey meat, roasted herbs, blackberries, and asphalt. DOMAINE DE BONSERINE CÔTE ROTIE LA VIALLIÈRE  2005

  19737    (XD)            750 mL    $89

TASTING NOTE: Virile/masculine and structured and tannic, is the dense ruby/purple-colored 2005 Cote Rotie La Vialliere. This wine will need at least 4-5 years of cellaring. It is a big, beefy wine with notes of black and red fruits, crushed rocks, scorched earth, and spice. It's a connoisseur's wine to forget for at least 5-6 years. Score - 89. FERRATON PÈRE & FILS ERMIITAGE LE MÉAL  2005

  73577    (XD)            750 mL    $109

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Ermitage Le Meal from that famous parcel on the mid-/upper slope with fabulous exposition, represents 357 cases. A terrific effort from Ferraton, the wine has a dense purple color to the rim, a sweet, smoky, black currant nose intermixed with blood, tapenade, truffle, and spice box. It is full-bodied, opulent, rich, and surprisingly approachable for a 2005. I must have caught it on a good day, because the tannins are there, but not aggressive. This wine should evolve for at least 20-25 years. Score - 93. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2008)

GUIGAL CÔTE RÔTIE CHÂTEAU D'AMPUIS  2003

  741983    (XD)            750 mL    $159

TASTING NOTE: A wine worth filling up the trunk of the car with is the 2003 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis. This is staggering wine and as profound as most of the single vineyard Cote Roties are in some other vintages. The wine has a deep ruby/purple color and an extraordinary nose of smoky bacon fat and roasted meats, tapenade, black raspberry, cherry, and cassis. The intense aromatics are followed by equally thick, unctuous flavors with huge body, a voluptuous texture, and yet wonderful freshness, purity, and length. This is an amazing wine made from a remarkable blend of some of the best parcels in Cote Rotie - La Garde, La Clos, Grande Plantee, Pommiere, Pavillon Rouge, and Le Moulin. This wine should evolve for 20 or more years, but will never be undrinkable. Score - 96. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Apr. 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Still a bit tight, with alluring hints of warm brioche and wheat biscuit giving slowly to richer notes of nut oil, papaya, almond butter and carmelized figs. Long, richly detailed finish should open up nicely with mid-term cellaring. Great combination of richness and purity. Drink now through 2013. Score - 94. TASTING NOTE: Beautiful dried peach, apricot and pear fruit flavors, with additional notes of quince, anise and minerals. Combines the sweet fruit character of a late-harvest wine with the structure and minerality of a dry wine to give a unique experience. Drink now through 2008. Score - 93. E. GUIGAL HERMITAGE EX-VOTO BLANC  2003

  54148    (D)            750 mL    $159

TASTING NOTE: The 2003 Hermitage Ex-Voto blanc is the quintessential white Hermitage, a blend of 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne with extraordinary honeyed licorice, quince, marmalade, and truffle notes, an unctuous texture, great purity and richness, and a profound mouthfeel and length. This is extraordinary wine and certainly one of the most profound dry whites I ever tasted. It seems to be set for an amazingly long life. Score - 96. TASTING NOTE: The 2003 Hermitage Le Reverdy Estate may be the finest white Hermitage I have tasted from Ferraton. Sadly, there are only 200 cases. Aromas of white currants, quince, and hazelnuts emerge from this rich, full-bodied, unctuously-textured, impressive 2003.

CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE HOMMAGE A JACQUES PERRIN  2005
Grande Cuvée

  73346    (XD)            750 mL    $325

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin represents the essence of Beaucastel. A super-concentrated, somewhat over the top style of wine based on 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, and the rest Counoise and Syrah, they only made 4,000 bottles in 2005. The wine has an inky blue/purple color, a more dramatic bouquet than the regular cuvee, consisting of asphalt, crushed pepper, fresh red beef, tar, truffle, and loads of blueberry, blackberry, and cassis. The wine is very full-bodied, extraordinarily powerful, frightfully concentrated, and very tannic and backward. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+. Score - 98. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

CLOS DES PAPES CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE  2005

  963546    (XD)            750 mL    $79

Ranked #1 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines list of 2007.

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape has a deep ruby/purple color, identical alcohol to the 2006, and the same pH, but it is a much more tannic wine and the acids seem slightly more elevated, even though the analysis says they are not. A complex nose of resiny pine forest notes intermixed with black raspberry, sweet kirsch, licorice and lavender jumps from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-colored wine. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and tannic, this wine begs for 4-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 25+ years ... Score - 95. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

CLOS SAINT-JEAN CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE DEUS EX MACHINA  2005

  71480    (D)            750 mL    $99

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina is utter perfection in the glass - an awesome wine both comparable to and eclipsing the otherworldly 2003. Saturated purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of incense, fruitcake, blackberry and black cherry notes with some subtle roasted herbs, roast beef, smoke, and licorice, massive fruit concentration, extraordinary intensity, unreal purity and harmony, and a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol, this is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the most compelling Chateauneuf du Papes I have ever tasted. The length goes on well past a minute, and the wine should age effortlessly for 25-30+ years. The tannins are formidable according to consulting oenologist Philippe Cambie, but they are nearly obscured by the wine's remarkable concentration and intensity. This is a riveting wine. Score - 100. DOMAINE DE CRISTIA CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE CUVÉE RENAISSANCE  2005

  71399    (D)            750 mL    $97

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Renaissance (70% old vine Grenache aged in neutral wood and 30% Mourvedre aged in small oak casks) possesses a dense purple color as well as complex aromatics of soy, blueberries, blackberries, charcoal, and truffles. Deep, concentrated, dense, and rich, it has even more structure than the Vieilles Vignes cuvee (no doubt due to the Mourvedre component), but is somewhat more forward in the mouthfeel. Again, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. Score - 95. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

TASTING NOTE: One of the vintage's most compelling efforts is Cristia's 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. It boasts a dense purple hue along with spectacular aromas of camphor, creosote, incense, blackberries, and caramelized cherries. Made from 100% old vine Grenache and aged in neutral small oak casks, this spectacularly rich wine exhibits a multilayered texture, fabulous density, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. It is an amazing, even prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape, but patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.

TASTING NOTE: The exquisite, deep purple-colored 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts an exceptional bouquet of black currants, creosote, kirsch, spring flowers, pepper, and tobacco leaves. It is fabulously rich, expansive, glorious pure, full-bodied, long, and deep. Sweetness from high glycerin and rich fruit nearly conceals some formidable tannins in the finish. This wine should evolve and last for over two decades. Score - 95. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE  2004

  65805    (D)            750 mL    $55

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is made from 40- to 100-year-old Grenache vines (about 80% of the cuvee), and the balance Cinsault and Syrah, with the Grenache again aged in tank, and the other varietals aged in small barrels. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color and a big, sweet, gamey nose of roasted meats, melted licorice, and brandy-macerated black cherries with hints of balsam wood and cassis. It is deep, full-bodied, rich, and an impressive wine that represents one of the better examples of the vintage. The tannins are silky and the wine lush. This offering should age for 12-15 years. TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape white (80% Roussanne and the rest Marsanne, Picpoul, and Bourboulenc) is superb. A beauty of richness, elegance, and complexity, it exhibits notes of tropical fruits, marmalade, honeysuckle, rose water, and spice. The wine is rich, full-bodied, with tremendous texture, length, and purity. It should drink well for at least 5-6 years before it goes into that weird state of development. Score - 94. TASTING NOTE: [100% Marsanne] Yellow-gold. Smoky pear and apricot aromas are deepened by fig, cured meat and anise. Rich and fleshy in texture, offering sweet orchard and pit fruit flavors along with candied flowers and licorice, and picking up subtle baking spices on the finish. There's outstanding energy and cut for such depth and palate-staining concentration. Score - 94. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Jan./Feb. 2008)

DOMAINE WEINBACH RIESLING SCHLOSSBERG  2005
Alsace Grand Cru, Clos des Capucins
(Colette, Catherine et Laurence Faller, Prop.-Vign.)

21030    (D)            750 mL    $56

TASTING NOTE: From the cooler, upper portions of this granite-based cru, the Weinbach 2005 Riesling Schlossberg smells piquantly of lemon, resin, and peach kernel, fills the mouth with bright citrus and obvious if hard-to-characterize minerality and finishes absolutely dry, mineral, lusciously citric, and very subtly bitter. This rapier but refined and deliciously delicate Riesling should be fascinating to follow for at least 8-10 years. Score - 91. (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2008)

Alsace Grand Cru, Clos des Capucins
(Colette, Catherine et Laurence Faller, Prop.-Vign.)

63297    (MD)            750 mL    $87

TASTING NOTE: From largely old vines in the middle slope of the cru, Weinbach's 2005 Riesling Schlossberg Cuvee Saint Catherine smells in a by now very familiar manner of citrus oil, peach kernel, smoke and spice, here with a pineapple overtone. Enormously ripe and lush, with tropical tendencies to its fruit and deep nut oil richness, this nevertheless also displays the most prominent and stony mineral character and the tightest, brightest coil of acidity of any Weinbach 2005 Riesling, and its long finish is truly dry-tasting. This intense beauty should we well worth following - indeed improve - over at least a 12-15 year period, and those (like this taster) who are most fascinated by mature Riesling will - after a prudent interim assessment - probably choose to hold it longer. Score - 93. (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2008)

TASTING NOTE: Cooked fruits and creamed corn over wet stone and menthol on the nose, with warmer notes of honey and resin. Fat, round and voluminous; large-scaled and mouthfilling. This makes a soft impression owing to its sheer thickness of texture but there's a powerful wet stone minerality here and very good freshness for the year. Certainly not typical for this wine but impressive. Just three grams of residual sugar. Score - 90. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Nov./Dec. 2006)

Displaying a floral, vanilla-tinged bouquet, the Mambourg is an off-dry white balanced by a firm acidity, and offers replays of citrus fruits, peach and honey on the palate. Presented in a unique, ridged, flute-style bottle, this Pinot Gris is designed to complement a wide range of rich and spicy foods and will reward 2-4 years in a cellar.

PHILIPPONNAT CLOS DES GOISSES BRUT CHAMPAGNE  1999

  540211    (XD)            750 mL    $219

One of the very few single-vineyard Champagnes that is produced in the market today.

TASTING NOTE: The nose on this wine blew me away with its open aromas of big citrus, meaty minerality, and yellow apples. Not wanting to show that it can't keep up, the palate is just as open for business with a complex mix of pears, cream, and bright yellow apples. A very long finish of lightly oaked pears and creamy sweet citrus drives this wine home. Philipponnat has released this vintage a bit younger than they usually release a Clos des Goisses, but the wine called for it. This is the most open and ready to go of the Clos des Goisses noted here; it has the least blooming to do in the future. I would recommend popping this and letting your other vintages sit, age, and improve. Score - 91-92. (Brad Baker, www.gangofpour.com, Sept. 2007)

  910687    (XD)            750 mL    $49

Daumas Gassac has endeavoured to create a 'top growth' wine of the South. To this end, it has introduced new winemaking methods to the Languedoc, including organic farming, use of low-yield old vines, and the blending of a myriad of grape varieties to add greater complexity and structure to its wines. The results of these efforts can be experienced in the Mas de Daumas Gassac 2006, a robust red bursting with flavours of sweet black cherry, cassis, and black olive tapenade.

PRIMO PALATUM CAHORS MYTHOLOGIA  2003

  65250    (XD)            750 mL    $64

"Xavier Copel has shot to fame in recent years with his Primo Palatum wines. He's one of the new breed of negociant éleveurs: he doesn't own vineyards, but instead sources top vineyards in each of the many regions he works with and then works with the producer, in their cellar, to fashion the best wines possible from the respective terroir ... Born in Cahors, Copel graduated from University in Toulouse and began his negociant business in 1996/7. At first, he reports, 'it was a bit tough'. But now he has international visibility, and his wines command prices that are typically among the highest in the appellations he works in. The wines are extremely impressive, in a modern, forward and occasionally slightly oaky style. There's no doubting his serious intent, though, and I'd be interested to try more of his wines." TASTING NOTE: Pale golden yellow. Aromas of white peach, acacia blossom and lemon waft over the brown spice botrytis. Rich and glossy in texture, with creamy mirabelle fruit tinged by vanilla and cinnamon and driven by extremely vibrant citric acidity. Boasts a tad more depth, balance and length than the auslese #9. Egon Müller wines are famed for their pure varietal expression. The 2006 Riesling Kabinett is no exception, vividly displaying the minerality and slate from which it was sourced, in addition to complex aromas and flavours of lemon zest, honey, peach, and lime cordial. The wine is impressively balanced with a lingering seam of acidity.

QmP, Ürziger Würzgarten, Estate Btld.

  62778    (S)            375 mL    $162

TASTING NOTE: A 2005 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Beerenauslese represents this year's only Loosen B.A. Confectionary aromas of strawberry and vanilla icing suggest Eiswein. In the mouth, this is incredibly rich, with an oily, nearly-buttery texture and flavors that bespeak a true super-concentrate of tiny, ennobled berries. Enveloping honey and icing-like sweetness dominate the finish for now, but distinct strawberry jam, butter cream and salt elements are present and the sheer length, breadth, and richness on exhibit here hold the promise of something sensational at points in time 15 to 30 years from now. Score - 94. (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

MARKUS MOLITOR RIESLING AUSLESE  2005
QmP, Zeltinger Deutschherrenberg, Estate Btld.

  74013    (S)            750 mL    $48

TASTING NOTE: Tasted from cask, the "two star" 2005 Zeltinger Deutschherrenberg Riesling Auslese** - from a site next to Urziger Wurzgarten with which this was my first acquaintance - marks a change in personality from the wines that went before, for possessing high (9.4 grams) acidity and having been harvested under the influence of noble rot. Aromas of mandarin orange, pineapple, and peach lead to a sweet but ingratiatingly juicy, faintly oily palate impression. The finish here is very long and sweet and colorful in its combination of citrus, pit and tropical fruits, all accented with brown spices and smoky overtones of botrytis. Gaudy this may be, but it is impossible not to be impressed, and Molitor would have us believe that this is a 30-year wine. Score - (90-92). TASTING NOTE: Fine purity and a weightless quality make this intense dessert Riesling taste light, despite its sweetness and vivid flavors of lime, peach and mineral. Shows very clean botrytis character, with balance and harmony, all ending with a trace of dried citrus and tropical fruit. Drink now through 2040. Score - 98. TASTING NOTE: This is breathtaking in its balance and finesse, with extraordinary detail and focus. It's heady and tooth-rattlingly dense, yet its acidity keeps the wine racy and sleekly elongated, allowing the flavors to expand on the palate in three-dimensional complexity. It finishes with complex aromas and a palate-staining length, not showy, but quietly dazzling with understated elegance. Score - 96. www.wineandspiritsmagazine.com, Dec. 2005)

TASTING NOTE: Clean, focused and packed with apricot, lime and mineral aromas and flavors, this '03 auslese shows harmony and length. Müller-Catoir is located at the foot of the scenic Haardt mountains in the Pfalz region and is a premier estate that has been crafting complex off-dry wines, like this Herrenletten Riesling Spätlese, since the 18th century. "Since the arrival of young Mosel-born Martin Franzen at this great estate so long associated with the wisdom and artistry of Hans-Gunter Schwarz's 36-year tenure as cellar master, I have been struck by a degree of qualitative continuity and stylistic affinity with the ancient regime that other commentators seem not to have noticed." (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2005) Though the 2006 vintage has yet to be reviewed, past vintages of this wine have received 90+ scores from The Wine Advocate.

TASTING NOTE: This wines pure, concentrated flavors of mango, tangerine and Asian pear are honeyed and intense, while its fine balance gives this a remarkable clarity and grace. With all the opulent ripeness of the vintage, that balance lifts the flavors, making them seem almost weightless. Score - 92. (Wine & Spirits, Dec. 2007)

MASTERBERARDINO RADICI TAURASI RISERVA  2001
DOCG

  75473    (XD)            750 mL    $62

TASTING NOTE: Mastroberardino's 2001 Taurasi Riserva is a very pretty wine. Notes of smoke, ash, cracked pepper, earthiness, dark cherries and cured meats flow from its medium-bodied, classically-styled frame. The tannins are quite firm and today the wine comes across as tightly wound, with plenty of structure in reserve. It offers notable purity and poise, but will need at least several years in bottle before it reveals its full potential. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2026. Score - 92. TASTING NOTE: How long ago it seems when we felt we had to retrace the rebirth of Irpinian wine when talking about Mastroberardino. The history of glories is there, and no one can gainsay it, but now what grabs attention is the qualitative upturn that has taken the winery right back to the top of the national tree in a couple of years [...]Radici Riserva '99 is history perpetuated and advanced: a proudly austere and juicily acidic glass of wine.

ALDO CONTERNO BARBERA D'ALBA CONCA TRE PILE  2004
DOC

  52654    (XD)            750 mL    $46

TASTING NOTE: Medium red-ruby. Very ripe nose combines an almost medicinal quality with notes of chocolate liqueur, violet, truffle and oak. Juicy, saline and powerful on the palate, with a flavor of cherry-and-chocolate truffle. Conveys an impression of sappy energy and really scrapes the palate clean. Firmly structured and very long and fresh on the aftertaste. This very pure but youthfully austere wine needs to be served with fatty meat-or cellared for another couple of years. Franco describes this as "a real Piemonte style in its body and acidity, and not necessarily for international tastes. Some people preferred the more open 2003." Score - 91(+?). DOCG

  596072    (D)            750 mL    $46

TASTING NOTE: Medium-deep red. Rich, concentrated nose offers intense black pepper, redcurrant, red cherry and plum aromas; extremely inviting for its depth and sweetness. The palate shows more viscous sweetness, with a chewy depth to the red cherry, plum and currant flavors. A sound acid/tannin balance and plenty of fruit make this wine an absolute winner for the vintage, although it shows very good rather than outstanding length (it's made from the younger nebbiolo vines of the estate). Improves greatly in the glass with air. Score - 89. (Ian D'Agata, International Wine Cellar, Oct. 2007)

  50989    (XD)            750 mL    $239

TASTING NOTE: The 2000 Barolo Riserva Granbussia is unquestionably a great effort. It presents a gorgeous, spiced nose followed by layers of sweet red fruit that open onto the palate with notable concentration and length, all while maintaining a restrained sense of balance for the vintage, with soft tannins that make it a highly attractive wine even at this young age. It should be at its finest between ages 8 and 20. Whereas the Riserva at many estates is the most powerful wine, at Aldo Conterno the Riserva is the most elegant. It is made from a blend of fruit sourced from the Romirasco (70%) Cicala (15%) and Colonnello (15%) vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. Score - 93. CHRYSEIA  2005
DOC Douro

  69674    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 "CHRYSEIA" was the result of a strict selection, bottling only 25,000 liters of 200,000 kg vinified. There were a little more than 2,500 cases produced. In 2005, the winery leaned to Touriga Nacional (70%) in its blend, a higher percentage than normal, with the rest mainly Touriga Franca. Unlike in the Post Scriptum, Touriga Nacional flavors dominate this wine, throwing off ripe, plum nuances that are particularly succulent on Day 2. Like many '05s, it is graceful and elegant, and seems a bit understated compared to the previous two vintages, particularly at first. With air, the wine asserts itself somewhat, expands in the glass and shows off the fine fruit flavors it has. There are refined, well integrated tannins around the edges that become more prominent with air. The wine is velvety, suave and harmonious, its balance impeccable. It grows on you, and becomes more and more interesting. It drank best on Day 2, despite being quite approachable early on. Drink 2009-2020. Score - 92. (Mark Squires, www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2007)

FERREIRA DOURO RESERVA  1997
DOC Douro

  683631    (XD)            750 mL    $65

Produced only in vintage years of exceptional quality, this is considered one of the most exciting of Douro's red table wines. A blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca, this full-bodied red displays remarkable structure and finesse. Aromas of spice, tobacco, cherry and red plum on the nose give way to flavours of spicy oak and dried fruit, with a slightly sweet, tangy finish. The fine tannins will let this wine age gracefully for another five years.

Opaque purple in color, the wine exhibits expressive aromas of mineral, tobacco, scorched earth, black currant and blackberry jam. Medium-bodied, the wine offers intense, spicy, black fruit flavors, layers of fruit, and a long finish. It should continue to evolve with 2-3 years in the cellar and drink well through 2024. Inky purple-hued, it exhibits a superb nose of wood smoke, pencil lead, spice box, scorched earth, and blackberry. This leads to a layered, opulent wine with 5-7 years of aging potential.   74559    (D)            750 mL    $115

TASTING NOTE: The profound 2001 Palomero boasts an opaque ruby/purple color as well as an extraordinary perfume of sweet saddle leather, smoke, herbs, blackberries, creme de cassis, truffles, and graphite. One of the most prodigious Ribera del Dueros I have tasted, it offers great precision, fabulous concentration, and a long, 40+ second finish. Anticipated maturity: now - 2016. Score - 96. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2005)

JEAN LEON CABERNET SAUVIGNON GRAN RESERVA  1999
DO Penedès

  77206    (XD)            750 mL    $45

Vinya La Scala boasts the first-ever Cabernet Sauvignon made in Spain. Produced only in vintages when the weather provides exceptional conditions, the Jean Leon Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva spends two years in French oak and three years cellar-ageing in bottle before its release. Complex and well-balanced, the wine displays intriguing flavours and aromas of spice, oak, and dark fruit. The labels for this wine traditionally feature artwork by well-known Catalan artists; the design for the 2006 vintage is titled 'Aragó' by Josep Ma Siera.

MIGUEL TORRES GRANS MURALLES  1999
DO Conca de Barberà

  973446    (XD)            750 mL    $65

TASTING NOTE: Alluring and elegant. A modern-style wine with distinctive regional flavors. Smoky chocolate notes from new oak frame intriguing notes of wild berry, mountain herbs and minerals. MIGUEL TORRES MAS LA PLANA CABERNET SAUVIGNON  1997
DO Penedès

  70433    (XD)            750 mL    $49

TASTING NOTE: Ripe blackberry and cherry fruit and classy oak team up to deliver the goods in this palate-pleasing Cabernet Sauvignon. There's plenty of tobacco and earth, and in style and weight it's somewhere between Bordeaux and California, with a heavier nod to the former. Already delicious, this will hold well through the decade, maybe longer. It is an apt demonstration of why weight and density are less important than flavor, texture and balance. Take that, extraction junkies. Drink now through 2008 and beyond. Cellar Selection. Score - 92. (Michael McNeil, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2002)

MIGUEL TORRES MAS LA PLANA GRAN CORONAS  1994
DO Penedès

  315838    (XD)            750 mL    $59

TASTING NOTE: Bordeaux-like aromas of currant, cedar, tar, tobacco and spicy oak. Very intense, tart-edged tobacco and smoke flavors are distinctly claret-like and suave. Finishes very long and firm, with tongue-dusting but even tannins. Grew richer and deeper with time in the glass. Like the Cabernet Sauvignon, strong for this wine, and worth cellaring. Score - 91(+?). (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 1998)

TASTING NOTE: This is one of a new series of super-premium wines from Henry of Pelham, already well-known for their Cab-Merlots, and it deserves all its advance billing. The fruit is exceptionally well focused, and expresses the superlative growing conditions of 2002. The fruit-acid-tannin balance is almost perfect, and the wine is stylistically elegant, with a long finish. Pair it with a dish that will bring out the best in both, like well-herbed rack of lamb, grilled medium-rare. Score - (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, Feb. 19, 2005)

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 is the current vintage and the extra age brings out the petrol-lanolin notes to go with intense citrus and mineral aromas. TASTING NOTE: This wine is rich, with an inviting aroma of vanilla, cassis and plums. That leads to flavours of chocolate, plums and currants. The long, ripe tannins and the bold oak flavours contribute to the satisfying, mouth-falling textures of this wine. The finish lingers forever, showing elegance and balance. CONIGLIO OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Napa Valley

  70755    (D)            750 mL    $69

Coniglio's winemaking philosophy is to bring out the distinct characteristics of varietal and location in their single-vineyard wines. The grapes for this Cabernet Sauvignon were selected from the Oakville Mountain District of the Napa Valley. The resulting wine is intensely dark-purple in the glass, and displays a complex combination of dark fruit and earth aromas, with rich, silky tannins and ripe plum flavours. Match it tonight with rare steak or cellar it for 6+ years.

RUBICON ESTATE CASK CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Napa Valley

  29553    (XD)            750 mL    $99

Formerly Niebaum-Coppola Estate winery, Rubicon uses only estate-grown fruit to craft its Cask Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is barrel aged in American oak for twenty-four months, adding toasty vanilla notes to the powerful, ripe red cherry flavour. Firm tannins and excellent balance align here, suggesting the wine will reward 3-5 years of bottle ageing.

SIGNORELLO ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Napa Valley

  60152    (XD)            750 mL    $49

TASTING NOTE: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon; 18% Merlot; 7% Cabernet Franc. Every bit as rich in creamy oak as is its high-priced proprietary partner [Signorello Padrone], this impressively extracted youngster is solidly focused on curranty fruit with accents of root beer, vanilla, dried herbs and tar scattered throughout. It is generally plump and fleshy in feel although it does run into a fair measure of finishing tannin, and it comes with the recommendation for another four or five years of age. Score - 91. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, Aug. 2007)

CHIMNEY ROCK ELEVAGE  2003
Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

  659821    (XD)            750 mL    $72

The 2003 Elevage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot aged 18 months in new French oak. The wine displays sensuous aromas of dark chocolate, mocha, and ripe berry fruit, with succulent flavours of plum and black cherry. Elegantly structured with finely balanced tannins, this wine exhibits exceptional harmony.

GEYSER PEAK CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE  2004
Alexander Valley, Sonoma County

  716431    (XD)            750 mL    $55

Aged for 18 months in American oak, this powerful wine conveys heady aromas of blackberry and blueberry fruit along with cedary oak and a wisp of mint. Its rich and decadent palate also offers a pleasing, underlying elegance all of which reverberate beautifully on a persistent finish. A good candidate for short-term cellaring (2-3 years).

ROBERT YOUNG SCION CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2003
Alexander Valley, Sonoma County

  670422    (XD)            750 mL    $65

Aged in French oak (40% new) for 24 months, this Cab was judiciously blended with Cabernet Franc (9%), Merlot (9%), and, new this vintage, Petit Verdot (4%) by winemaker Kevin Warren. The Verdot upped the wine's spice and floral characteristics. The palate reveals dark fruit and smoky notes, herbs and spice, and layers of complexity. Cellar for up to 8 years.

ARROWOOD SARALEE'S VINEYARD SYRAH  2002
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County

  64550    (XD)            750 mL    $55

TASTING NOTE: The 2002 Syrah Saralee's Vineyard, which includes 3% Viognier in the blend, is one of the greatest Syrahs Arrowood has produced. Dick Arrowood has always been ahead of the educational curve with northern California Syrah, and this is a fabulous effort. Inky/purple-colored, with a glorious perfume of lilacs intermixed with blackberries, melted asphalt, and notions of bacon, smoke, and toast, this rich, opulent, voluptuously-textured Syrah exhibits great ripeness, purity, and richness as well as a layered, multidimensional finish. It should last and evolve for a decade. Drink 2003-2015. Score - 93-96. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2003)

RAYMOND GENERATIONS CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2000

The Raymond winemaking family is now in its fifth generation in the Napa Valley. Cellar for up to five years or try it tonight with rare roast beef.

California
White Wine
CAKEBREAD CHARDONNAY RESERVE  2004
Carneros, Napa Valley

  70763    (D)            750 mL    $75

The harvest for the 2004 Cakebread Chardonnay Reserve was the earliest on record since 1982, resulting in a wine of extraordinary ripeness and densely concentrated flavours. Rich pear and melon aromas mingle pleasantly with creamy, buttery scents and toasty oak notes. The palate is well-balanced with pear, melon, and a hint of citrus on the long, silky finish. This has the structure to bottle age 5-8 years beautifully.

Washington State
Red Wine
PIROUETTE  2005
Columbia Valley

  64410    (XD)            750 mL    $75

Long Shadows Vintners was named 'Winery of the Year' in 2007 by Food & Wine Magazine. "Some people don't grasp the concept of retirement. By the time Allen Shoup stepped away from a distinguished 20-year career as CEO of Washington state wine giant Stimson Lane (owner of Chateau Ste. Michelle and Columbia Crest), he was already at work on a new venture. Shoup's groundbreaking new Long Shadows is devoted to producing luxury wines from Washington vineyards in partnership with international winemaking superstars (i.e., people who cast long shadows). Among the bottlings are the Sangiovese blend Saggi, from Tuscany's Folonari family; the Cabernet blend Pirouette, from Napa's Philippe Melka [and Agustin Huneeus Sr.]; and the Syrah Sequel, from Australia's John Duval (formerly winemaker at Penfolds). The wines are all produced at a state-of-the-art facility in Walla Walla - where a superstar may even be spotted from time to time." (Richard Nalley, www.foodandwine.com, Oct. 2007) While no reviews were available at press time, the last two vintages received scores of 93 from The Wine Advocate and this wine's reputation continues to gain momentum.

SEQUEL SYRAH  2005
Columbia Valley

  64428    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: Firm in texture, with a crisp feel to the tannins under the ripe, narrowly focused blackberry, plum and black olive flavors. The finish keeps singing, however, as the pretty flavors persist. Drink now through 2011. Score - 91. (Harvey Steiman, www.winespectator.com, Dec. 31, 2007)

CHESTER KIDDER RED BLEND  2004
Columbia Valley

  64758    (XD)            750 mL    $69

TASTING NOTE: (a blend of Bordeaux varieties and some syrah; this one's the wine of Gilles Nicault, who also serves as the resident winemaker for all of the Long Shadows bottlings; aged for 28 months in 85% new barrels that were air-dried for a full three years) Subtly complex nose melds plum, cranberry, chocolate, tobacco and fresh herbs. Very ripe, fat and sweet, with a hint of game adding nuance to the redcurrant and chocolate flavors. An attractively plump wine that finishes sweet and long, with impressively lush tannins. Score - 91. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Nov./Dec. 2007)

FEATHER CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Columbia Valley

  64766    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon is made by Randy Dunn of Napa Valley fame. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon selected from five vineyards sources and aged for 23 months in French oak. This opaque purple wine delivers classic Cabernet aromas of toast, lead pencil, black currant and blackberry. It has excellent flavors and balance but is just slightly lacking in breadth and length. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding effort. Score - 91. (Jay Miller, www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2007)

PEDESTAL MERLOT  2004
Columbia Valley

  64782    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: Dense and focused, yet balances deftly enough to let the currant, cherry and black raspberry fruit pierce through a veil of crisp tannins. Has power without excessive weight. The finish lingers extraordinarily well. Best from 2009 through 2014. Score - 93. (Harvey Steiman, www.winespectator.com, May 31, 2007)

Port
QUINTA DO NOVAL SILVAL VINTAGE PORT  2005
Btld. 2007

  73684    (S)            750 mL    $59

Declared only in very good years, Silval is created in the traditional manner by revered producer Quinta do Noval. Made with respected Douro grape varieties that are foot-trodden and fermented in lagares, the wine spends 18 months maturing in oak casks before bottling. The resulting Port combines power, complexity and concentration with a forward, fruity style which makes it approachable when quite young, but may reward 8-18+ years of bottle ageing.

TAYLOR FLADGATE VARGELLAS VINHA VELHA VINTAGE PORT  2000
Btld. 2002

  73635    (M)            750 mL    $309

TASTING NOTE: An aromatic delight with kirsch, anise and dark plums that leap from the glass. This Vinha Velha is no wall flower! While it delivers infused flavors of sweet dark cherry, espresso bean and just picked grapes, the jammy, ripe fruit is absolutely delicious today. Lively tannins pack a puckering wallop on the palate and the admirable persistence on the finish shows the great promise for longevity in the cellar. As much as I enjoy this classy and voluptuous Vargellas, side-by-side with the 2000 Taylor VP, there is no question that I prefer the 'classic' Taylor Fladgate bottling. However, this is certainly no slouch and this single Quinta bottling is better than many other 2000 VPs I have tasted. About 2,500 cases worth of juice was harvested from the old vines parcels, yet only 240 cases were vinified as Vargellas Vinha Velha. The balance became the backbone for the 2000 Taylor Vintage Port. Score - 95+. (Roy Hersh, www.fortheloveofport.com, May 2004)

TAYLOR FLADGATE VINTAGE PORT  1985
Btld. 1987

  984591    (MS)            750 mL    $209

TASTING NOTE: Medium ruby. Beautiful aromas of flowers and fresh plum, with hints of stems. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with gorgeous silky tannins and a long, long finish. This is just starting to come around and offers wonderful flavors. Long life ahead, but ready to try. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Drink now. Score - 93. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Web Only, 2008)

Scotch Whisky
BALLANTINE'S 30-YEAR-OLD VERY OLD BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY

69690    750 mL    $399

TASTING NOTE: Rich amber color. Sweet dried fruit, honey, and toffee aromas. Round generous and silky entry. Pleasantly, medium-bodied. Heather, light peat, toffee and brown spice flavors. Long, peppery sweet finish with drying wood tannins, peat and minerality showing through. Smooth and classy with fine balance of sweetness and spice. Score - 92. www.tastings.com, April 1, 2005)

Tequila
PORFIDIO 100% AGAVE AÑEJO

  71324    750 mL    $199

TASTING NOTE: Porfidio Anejo Single Barrel is aged at least a year and is a great tequila ... Anejo is a deep gold color, clear, and sweet, boasting a big caramel type note that swallows up much of the tequila taste. Tequila snobs might crow that this note is a bit over the top, but truth be told, it is very tasty. Score - 1/2 (out of 5). (F.S. Fitzgerald, www.alcoholreviews.com)
