KAIKEN ULTRA MALBEC 2006
Mendoza, Argentina
050849 (D) 750 mL $ 19.95
TASTING NOTE: Kaiken Ultra has
emerged as a consistent top-shelf Malbec.
This vintage shows power, purity,
mineral, ripe fruit and well-applied oak.
It’s a generous wine with kirsch and
raspberry parfait flavors. It almost makes
it to creamy but by holding onto its
core acidity it guards overall balance.
Unforced but a little forceful; good
for those who like a ripe, meaty red wine.
Score – 91. (Michael Schachner,

SABOR REAL VIÑAS CENTENARIAS
TEMPRANILLO 2005
DO Toro, Spain
122325 (XD) 750 mL $ 19.95
TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Vinas
Centenarias, as the name implies, comes
from vines over 100 years of age.
Purple-colored, it offers up a complex
perfume of pain grille, violets, mineral,
spice box, black cherry and blackberry.
Bigger, richer, and more sweetly-fruited
than its younger colleague, it would benefit
from 2-3 years of additional cellaring.
Balanced, lengthy, and altogether hedonistic,
it should drink well through 2015.
Score – 91. (Jay Miller,

TASTING NOTE: Here’s a lovely,
summery Viognier from Ontario.
Pale lemon-gold in colour,
the nose opens with attractive
aromas of white flowers and
apricots. Flavours of apricots
and ripe citrus are joined by
a hint of peach and a gentle
touch of minerality on the
mouth-watering, medium-long
finish. It’s silky textured, and
also quite refreshing thanks to
lively, tangy acidity. Kick back
and savour with grilled chicken
salad, or roasted chicken
breast with apricot/mango
chutney. (VINTAGES panel,
