CREEKSIDE BUTLER'S GRANT RIESLING  2007
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula

Creekside's winemaking team of Craig McDonald and Rob Power were honoured as Ontario Winemakers of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards this past April. The duo's zesty Riesling shows lovely lime, green apple and mineral characteristics. It's slightly off-dry, medium-bodied with a lingering finish and would be a terrific match with barbecued jerk chicken or spicy Thai dishes.

DANIEL LENKO RESERVE RIESLING  2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: ... a very tasty offering that has ageing potential up the yin-yang. Lemon and peach greet the nose, while peach, apricot and citrus dance playfully on the tongue ... sharp acid makes this one a little puckering in the mouth, but also gives it great ageing potential. So, lie it on its side for awhile to give it time to settle down a little. Very tasty and a good finish makes this a fine offering and with the summer coming you'll want a few of these kicking around. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, March 24, 2008)

DANIEL LENKO SIGNATURE CHARDONNAY  2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Due for release in February 2008, this 200 case, produced only in good vintages, spends eighteen months in French oak (exclusively for this line of wines). Currently, it's young and fruity with good vanilla oak characteristics; an ageing potential of 10+ years according to Daniel, mainly due to its high acidity. And how, you may ask, do they decide the "good vintages" for the making of this wine? It seems that that job is up to Blackie the dog [the sixth Lenko dog with that name] - usually a shunner of bad fruit, Blackie eats the low hanging grapes only in the good years: 02, 05, 07 ... we should all keep our eyes peeled to see what year Blackie likes next. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, March 24, 2008)

DANIEL LENKO UNOAKED CHARDONNAY  2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula, Sur Lie

TASTING NOTE: A seriously delicious Chardonnay that should put paid to the Chardonnay-whiners. The fruit (peach, apricot pit, stewed pear, banana) is pure and clean, and the acidity is just right. Medium-bodied and dry, this is a marvelous pairing with chicken or pork in a rich, creamy sauce. Score - 1/2 (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, April 14, 2007)

VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula FLAT ROCK CELLARS SERIOUSLY TWISTED  2006
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula

Seriously Twisted is a different twist on Flat Rock's popular Twisted wine. Confused? No worries. Like its refreshing, carefree cousin, Seriously Twisted is a proprietary blend (shhh, it's a secret) of several white grape varieties. In this case, however, the grapes are barrel fermented, vinified and aged separately in French oak barrels as opposed to stainless steel tanks. The result is an equally fascinating and aromatic wine with a fuller body and richer texture than the original. Enjoy it with roast chicken, or pasta in a cream sauce.

VQA Niagara Peninsula LAILEY VINEYARD LATE HARVEST VIDAL  2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Lailey Vineyard can be counted on to consistently deliver an interesting array of late harvest wines that offer beautiful purity of fruit and bright balancing acidity. This affordable sweet wine reveals appealing peach, pineapple and tropical fruit aromas and a pleasing fruit cocktail flavour, good acidity and a touch of caramel sweetness on the palate. Great value. Score - (out of 5). (Christopher Waters, www.watersandwine.com, Dec. 12, 2007)

DANIEL LENKO OLD VINES MERLOT  2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: ... Although it spent eighteen months in French and American oak, the wood used was mostly [preconditioned] (read: used) oak, thus keeping the fruit to oakiness ratio in better balance. The smells are distinctively black cherry, blackberry and cocoa, while in the mouth, there are ripe tannins that wrap up dark berries, cinnamon, vanilla and spicy characteristics; there's even a cocoa powder like finish. Another cellar candidate (five to seven years), but can be consumed right now with your favorite piece of red meat. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, March 24, 2008)

PACIFIC RIM DRY RIESLING  2006
Washington

TASTING NOTE: Of all the wines, the dry Riesling is the most versatile - both on and off the food court. I found it focused and complex, layered with notes of apricot, peach, pear and lime along with minerals and the intriguing, aromatic signature of good Riesling that is often described as "petrol" or wet stone. It will also pair well with sushi and other Asian foods and appetizers such as smoked fish and prosciutto, and will serve as a sophisticated aperitif wine beyond standard-issue Chardonnay. Napa Valley BERINGER MERLOT  2005
Napa Valley

Beringer selects the finest vineyard sites for this Napa Valley Merlot. They also blend in small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for added complexity and structure. The wine expresses rushes of black cherry and blackberry fruit, as well as notes of mocha and licorice, all tempered by a layer of supple tannins. It has an easygoing appeal that would be equally suited to a casual barbecue or a formal dinner table.

Mendocino County BIG YELLOW CAB CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2005

Here's a Cab that is easy to hail. The whimsical name and label are all in good fun, but the wine inside is surprisingly serious. An excellent value, the wine is bursting with juicy blackberry flavours with notes of mocha and toasty oak. It's dry, well balanced and ready-to-drink. Well worth the fare. Enjoy it tonight with roast beef or grilled steak.

Calistoga, Napa Valley CHATEAU MONTELENA THE MONTELENA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Calistoga, Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from their old vineyards in Calistoga. This is a dense, ruby/purple-tinged wine with full body, and despite the softness of the general vintage, Montelena has plenty of structure. Like nearly every vintage of their top Cabernet Sauvignon, it will last for 25 or more years. The wine has sweet tannin in a broad, flavorful, concentrated style with plenty of black currant, licorice, and spice. The wine is beautifully textured, slightly more forward than most Montelena Cabernets tend to be. It is another beauty from probably the most consistent winery for Cabernet Sauvignon over the last three decades. Drink 2007 to 2037. Score - 94+. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2007)

Good solid consumer style for current consumption. Score - 88. (Anthony Gismondi & Stuart Tobe, www.gismondionwine.com, April 2008)

Alexander Valley, Sonoma

Clos du Bois, located in Geyserville, released its first wines in 1974. Erik Olsen, who drew high scores and plenty of attention for his work at Château Ste. Michelle, took over as winemaker in 2003. This is prototypical Alexander Valley Cab Sauv - rich, ripe and powerful, packed with loads of fruit, spice and cedary oak. It's soft and luscious, with a long finish.

Dry Creek Valley, Sommer GNARLIER HEAD OLD VINE ZIN  2005
Dry Creek Valley, Sommer's Vineyard

TASTING NOTE: Dry Creek Valley is Mecca for Zinfandel aficionados. Opaque in the glass, aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and spiced black plum rip from this fully textured, full-bodied and complex Zin. Flavours of Bing cherry, spice box and sweet briary berry are deftly juxtaposed with a good spine of zest and well integrated oak. Great fruit and equally great winemaking coalesced to make this stunning wine. It was difficult to spit. Score - (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, www.winecurrent.com,

Cerro Chapeu/Las Violetas New at VINTAGES
YSERN BLEND OF REGIONS TANNAT  2004
Cerro Chapeu/Las Violetas
(Bodegas Carrau)

Uruguay's winemakers are betting on Tannat to be their answer to Argentina's Malbec. Tannat is a relatively obscure grape variety originally from southwestern France. While it's known for making deeply tannic wines (hence the name), the climate in Uruguay is much better suited to ripening it consistently, making a softer but nevertheless boldly flavoured red wine. The fruit for this particular Tannat is sourced from two regions, vinified seperately and barrel aged for 20 months before blending and bottling. The result is a dark wine with complex layers of spices, chocolate and juicy berries and a lingering finish. Perfect with grilled beef.

AC, Monopole HAUTES CÔTES DE BEAUNE BLANC CLOS DE LA CHAIS DIEU  2005
AC, Monopole
(Château Philippe-le-Hardi)

The vineyard Clos Chaise Dieu Mono was abandoned after World War II and was not rejuvenated until the 1990s. The rejuvenation has clearly paid off, as this wine has won numerous national and international awards in the past two years. Floral, apple and gentle oak tones combine on the nose. Dry and fresh, the fruit and acid work in perfect harmony. Serve with grilled game bird or salmon.

Puligny-Montrachet is renowned for its Chardonnays at all levels, especially in a vintage as respected for white Burgundy as is 2006. Try this medium-bodied wine with pork tenderloin or boiled lobster with melted butter for dipping. It is also a good candidate for up to three years in the cellar.

AC DOMAINE HUET LE HAUT-LIEU VOUVRAY SEC  2007

There is little debate that Domaine Huet is one of the finest wineries in the Vouvray, if not the entire Loire Valley. Their skill with the Chenin Blanc grape causes one to wonder if they secretly perform the ancient art of alchemy on their wines. Perhaps they do, as they have been following Mother Nature-embracing biodynamic practices for many years. Whether dry, like this example, or sweet, Huet's Chenin wines taste like no others in the world. Enjoy now with a variety of shellfish, bloomy cheeses, poultry or mushroom dishes, or cellar these wines for 10+ years.

There is a famous quote from Volnay that says, "l'aimable gaieté fuire vos festins si de Volnay vous ne serves les vins", which loosely translates as "the fun and gaiety will flee your feast if you do not serve Volnay wines". This Pinot Noir, from the great 2005 vintage, is a true testament to this aphorism. So, to enliven your late summer or early autumn feasts, pull out this cherry-, berry- and beetroot-scented wine.

Cahors is unique amongst the important appellations of Southwest France in that neither of the Cabernets are allowed in the blends. This example is filled with aromas and flavours of spiced plum, cinnamon, blackberry, menthol, flowers and fresh herbs. Württemberg is a relatively warm region for Germany. Located in the southwestern corner of the country, most of its vineyards lie along the Neckar river and extend frorm the Tauber river valley to south of Stuttgart. Wines rarely come out of this small region because the Swabians, as the locals are called, are legendary for enjoying most of what is produced. Rieslings from this region tend to be fresh, fragrant, spicy, aromatic, fuller-bodied and strikingly fruity with a distinctive earthy finish.
