CREEKSIDE BUTLER'S GRANT RIESLING 2007
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Creekside's winemaking team of Craig McDonald and Rob Power were honoured as Ontario Winemakers of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards this past April. The duo's zesty Riesling shows lovely lime, green apple and mineral characteristics. It's slightly off-dry, medium-bodied with a lingering finish and would be a terrific match with barbecued jerk chicken or spicy Thai dishes.

DANIEL LENKO RESERVE RIESLING 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: ... a very tasty offering that has ageing potential up the yin-yang. Lemon and peach greet the nose, while peach, apricot and citrus dance playfully on the tongue ... sharp acid makes this one a little puckering in the mouth, but also gives it great ageing potential. So, lie it on its side for awhile to give it time to settle down a little. Very tasty and a good finish makes this a fine offering and with the summer coming you'll want a few of these kicking around. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, March 24, 2008)

DANIEL LENKO SIGNATURE CHARDONNAY 2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: Due for release in February 2008, this 200 case, produced only in good vintages, spends eighteen months in French oak (exclusively for this line of wines). Currently, it's young and fruity with good vanilla oak characteristics; an ageing potential of 10+ years according to Daniel, mainly due to its high acidity. And how, you may ask, do they decide the "good vintages" for the making of this wine? It seems that that job is up to Blackie the dog [the sixth Lenko dog with that name] - usually a shunner of bad fruit, Blackie eats the low hanging grapes only in the good years: 02, 05, 07 ... we should all keep our eyes peeled to see what year Blackie likes next. DANIEL LENKO UNOAKED CHARDONNAY 2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula, Sur Lie
TASTING NOTE: A seriously delicious Chardonnay that should put paid to the Chardonnay-whiners. The fruit (peach, apricot pit, stewed pear, banana) is pure and clean, and the acidity is just right. Medium-bodied and dry, this is a marvelous pairing with chicken or pork in a rich, creamy sauce. Score - 1/2 (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, April 14, 2007)

FLAT ROCK CELLARS SERIOUSLY TWISTED 2006
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Seriously Twisted is a different twist on Flat Rock's popular Twisted wine. Confused? No worries. Like its refreshing, carefree cousin, Seriously Twisted is a proprietary blend (shhh, it's a secret) of several white grape varieties. In this case, however, the grapes are barrel fermented, vinified and aged separately in French oak barrels as opposed to stainless steel tanks. The result is an equally fascinating and aromatic wine with a fuller body and richer texture than the original. Enjoy it with roast chicken, or pasta in a cream sauce.

DANIEL LENKO OLD VINES MERLOT 2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: ... Although it spent eighteen months in French and American oak, the wood used was mostly [preconditioned] (read: used) oak, thus keeping the fruit to oakiness ratio in better balance. The smells are distinctively black cherry, blackberry and cocoa, while in the mouth, there are ripe tannins that wrap up dark berries, cinnamon, vanilla and spicy characteristics; there's even a cocoa powder like finish. Another cellar candidate (five to seven years), but can be consumed right now with your favorite piece of red meat. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, March 24, 2008)

PACIFIC RIM DRY RIESLING 2006
Washington
TASTING NOTE: Of all the wines, the dry Riesling is the most versatile - both on and off the food court. I found it focused and complex, layered with notes of apricot, peach, pear and lime along with minerals and the intriguing, aromatic signature of good Riesling that is often described as "petrol" or wet stone. It will also pair well with sushi and other Asian foods and appetizers such as smoked fish and prosciutto, and will serve as a sophisticated aperitif wine beyond standard-issue Chardonnay. CHATEAU MONTELENA THE MONTELENA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004
Calistoga, Napa Valley
TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from their old vineyards in Calistoga. This is a dense, ruby/purple-tinged wine with full body, and despite the softness of the general vintage, Montelena has plenty of structure. Like nearly every vintage of their top Cabernet Sauvignon, it will last for 25 or more years. The wine has sweet tannin in a broad, flavorful, concentrated style with plenty of black currant, licorice, and spice. The wine is beautifully textured, slightly more forward than most Montelena Cabernets tend to be. It is another beauty from probably the most consistent winery for Cabernet Sauvignon over the last three decades. Drink 2007 to 2037. Score - 94+. Dry Creek Valley, Sommer's Vineyard
TASTING NOTE: Dry Creek Valley is Mecca for Zinfandel aficionados. Flavours of Bing cherry, spice box and sweet briary berry are deftly juxtaposed with a good spine of zest and well integrated oak. YSERN BLEND OF REGIONS TANNAT 2004
Cerro Chapeu/Las Violetas
(Bodegas Carrau)
Uruguay's winemakers are betting on Tannat to be their answer to Argentina's Malbec. Tannat is a relatively obscure grape variety originally from southwestern France. While it's known for making deeply tannic wines (hence the name), the climate in Uruguay is much better suited to ripening it consistently, making a softer but nevertheless boldly flavoured red wine. The fruit for this particular Tannat is sourced from two regions, vinified seperately and barrel aged for 20 months before blending and bottling. The result is a dark wine with complex layers of spices, chocolate and juicy berries and a lingering finish. Perfect with grilled beef.

Dry, medium-bodied with fresh red berry flavours and a zesty seam of acidity, serve this wine (chill it first for 15-20 minutes) with grilled burgers, sausages or pork chops hot off the barbecue this long weekend.

CHÂTEAU LES ROQUES CAHORS 2006
AC
(M. Pendaries, Prop.)
Cahors is unique amongst the important appellations of Southwest France in that neither of the Cabernets are allowed in the blends. The majority must be Malbec (called Auxerrois, locally), with Tannat and/or Merlot in a supporting role. This example is filled with aromas and flavours of spiced plum, cinnamon, blackberry, menthol, flowers and fresh herbs. A dry, supple, medium-bodied and food-friendly wine, particularly suited to root vegetable-based dishes or a rich pasta sauce.

HERZOG VON WÜRTTEMBERG RIESLING KABINETT HALBTROCKEN 2006
QmP, Estate Btld.
Württemberg is a relatively warm region for Germany. Located in the southwestern corner of the country, most of its vineyards lie along the Neckar river and extend frorm the Tauber river valley to south of Stuttgart. Wines rarely come out of this small region because the Swabians, as the locals are called, are legendary for enjoying most of what is produced. Rieslings from this region tend to be fresh, fragrant, spicy, aromatic, fuller-bodied and strikingly fruity with a distinctive earthy finish.
