BANROCK STATION SPARKLING SHIRAZ
South Eastern Australia

TASTING NOTE: ...Loads of bubbles, a dark crimson colour and plenty of dark berry overtones. The maturation in American oak provides a slight toasty tone, and unlike some sparkling reds, it has a savoury finish to compensate for all those sweet berry flavours. This is a wine you buy a dozen of, and then wonder how you got through them so quickly ... Score - (out of 5). (Michele Curtis, www.webwombat.com.au/lifestyle)

STREWN CABERNET ROSÉ  2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: This blend of 71% Cabernet Franc and 29% Cabernet Sauvignon shows good depth of colour leaning toward the day-glo side of pink. It has tantalizing aromas of grapefruit and black plum leading to a dry medium body with juicy fruit flavours and mouth puckering acidity and a hint of tannin. This would be a great rosé for around the barbecue this summer. (VINTAGES panel, April 2008)

TASTING NOTE: A big offering, the full-bodied 2005 Chardonnay Private Reserve reveals notions of hazelnuts intermixed with honeyed pineapple, poached pears, and toasty oak. TASTING NOTE: More restrained than normal, the 2005 Chardonnay Sbragia Limited Release offers copious quantities of honeyed fruit, full body, a rich, heady mouthfeel, but not the unctuosity normally found in this cuvee. Additionally, the oak is more restrained. There is abundant richness, but the vintage's acidity provides plenty of vibrancy and precision. It should drink nicely for 3-4 years. Score - 93. It is often said that Vouvray is Chenin Blanc and Chenin Blanc is Vouvray. Producers in Vouvray are always pursuing the pure fruit expression, so if you were to set up a cooperage in Vouvray to make barrels you would go broke pretty quickly. CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBERT LE CAUSSE  2004
AC Cahors
(Joel Delgoulet)

La Causse is a blend of 71% Malbec, 19% Merlot and 10% Tannat. A wine such as this proves that Argentina does not have a stranglehold on Malbec. Château de Chambert finds ways to bring forth its vibrant earthy fruitiness while still maintaining Cahors' structure. They add Merlot to fill in the fruit and the Tannat for structure and colour. This wine is still young and is a good candidate for 2-5 years in a cellar or pair it tonight with lamb chops or game meats such as bison steak.

CROCIANI VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO RISERVA  2003

AVELEDA FOLLIES VINHO VERDE ALVARINHO  2006

Made with the Alvarinho grape, Aveleda's Follies is attractive and friendly, with aromas of lemon, lime, grapefruit, and apple. There's plenty of fruit on the palate too, with ginger spice adding complexity. Try this quencher tonight with pad Thai or chicken Szechuan. TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Loureiro, from the sub-region of Lima, is delicate in the mid-palate, yet with a certain intensity on the finish, ending bright and somewhat succulent. It lingers nicely, and if it does not have the class and intensity of the Escolha, it is a very pleasing Vinho Verde for early consumption. Drink now-2009. Score - 88.
